Boys & Girls Clubs of America: Year of the Youth Gala

In a night filled with inspiration and hope, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) celebrated its next generation of leaders by naming Nico F. the 2024-2025 National Youth of the Year. This prestigious honor, which highlights the incredible achievements of young leaders across the country, was awarded during a star-studded event held at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, the city where BGCA’s national headquarters is located.

Sponsored by Toyota North America and Kohl’s, the evening was more than just a ceremony; it was a celebration of the power of community, mentorship, and the potential of youth. As the newest National Youth of the Year, Nico will receive a $50,000 college scholarship along with a host of gifts and life-changing experiences from BGCA’s valued partners.

A Night of Inspiration and Hope

The atmosphere at the Coca-Cola Roxy was nothing short of electric as six remarkable young finalists stood proudly on stage, representing their respective Boys & Girls Clubs from across the country. These teens, all selected for their outstanding contributions and leadership within their communities, embodied the very essence of BGCA’s mission: to enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Each finalist shared their unique story, detailing how the Boys & Girls Club had shaped their lives, helped them overcome challenges, and given them the tools to succeed. Jim Clark, the president and CEO of BGCA, addressed the audience with admiration for the finalists, emphasizing the immense impact of their leadership and contributions. “These young individuals are leaders in their Clubs and communities, showcasing remarkable attitudes and achievements. We’re thrilled to have Nico as our new National Youth of the Year,” he said.

Nico’s Remarkable Journey

Nico F.’s journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida began more than four years ago, and during this time, he has left a lasting legacy through his dedication, leadership, and service. Nico quickly became known as a standout leader, taking on numerous volunteer roles, tutoring younger members, and organizing community projects that benefited both the Club and his local neighborhood. His deep commitment to service didn’t go unnoticed, and he became a role model not just for his peers, but for the Club’s staff and the broader community.

One of Nico’s proudest accomplishments came in 2020 when he was awarded the title of “Mr. Boys & Girls Club,” an honor that recognized his consistent positive influence and the numerous contributions he had made to better his community. For Nico, the Boys & Girls Club became a platform not only to sharpen his leadership skills but also to amplify his voice as an advocate for change and progress.

The title of National Youth of the Year is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and service. Nico’s story is a powerful testament to the difference that a supportive community and strong mentorship can make in a young person’s life.

A Celebration of Talent and Generosity

The National Youth of the Year celebration was hosted by Sage Steele, a trustee of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and a passionate advocate for youth empowerment. Sage brought a contagious energy to the event, ensuring that the evening was not only memorable for the finalists but also for the audience, who had the pleasure of watching inspiring performances by young talent.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Atlanta and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis delivered incredible musical and dance performances that captivated the crowd. These performances were a showcase of the raw talent and potential that resides within Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, further emphasizing the importance of nurturing creativity and the arts in youth development.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of a $1 million donation to BGCA from Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Alex Rodriguez. This generous contribution will help support BGCA’s mission and ensure that more young people across the country have access to the life-changing programs offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Honoring Legacy: Stars in Attendance

The event attracted a host of prominent figures who have long supported Boys & Girls Clubs, including BGCA National Spokesperson Denzel Washington. Washington, an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Clubs, exemplifies the transformative power of the organization, often attributing much of his success to the mentorship and guidance he received at his local Club during his formative years.

Other notable attendees included actor JB Smoove, New Edition’s Ronnie DeVoe, MLB star Alex Rodriguez, former NFL player and philanthropist Cam Newton, WWE Superstars Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Naomi, as well as NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. Their presence at the event emphasized the broad influence of the Boys & Girls Clubs and highlighted the importance of influential figures advocating for and supporting the next generation of leaders.

Toyota and Kohl’s: Partners in Youth Empowerment

As Signature Sponsors of the Youth of the Year program, Toyota and Kohl’s have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to providing life-changing opportunities for young people. Their contributions to the National Youth of the Year program ensure that winners like Nico not only receive recognition but also gain practical support that can help them succeed in life.

Toyota presented Nico with a brand-new Toyota Corolla, offering him safe and reliable transportation as he embarks on the next chapter of his journey. Kohl’s, for their part, gifted Nico a $5,000 shopping experience and a unique trip to their headquarters in Milwaukee, where he will participate in a special marketing campaign.

These partnerships go beyond the material rewards; they are designed to empower youth by enhancing their skills, promoting mental well-being, and preparing them for a bright future. Toyota’s support helps develop essential life skills, while Kohl’s provides trauma-informed care training for local Clubs, ensuring that youth are given the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges.

Celebrating 75 Years of Youth of the Year

For over 75 years, the Youth of the Year program has been a cornerstone of BGCA’s efforts to celebrate and uplift the incredible achievements of youth across the country. Each year, six teens, representing Clubs from across the United States and military-connected Youth Centers, compete for the title of National Youth of the Year. These finalists are proof of the limitless potential that lies within every young person who walks through the doors of a Boys & Girls Club.

Nico F.’s journey is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have on millions of youth. As the 2024-2025 National Youth of the Year, Nico will serve as a role model and advocate for more than 3 million youth who are served by BGCA nationwide.
