Morehouse & Spelman Are Cancelling 2021 Traditional Homecoming Events

Atlanta college students are reeling following the announcement that both Morehouse and Spelman College are cancelling homecoming events. The news comes on the backbone of skyrocketing COVID-19 cases amongst college students. While Morehouse College was scheduled to have homecoming events from October 10-17th, Spelman was set to celebrate October 14-17th. Both colleges have decided that rising COVID cases are too big of a concern to carry-on with large gatherings. In fact, Morehouse’s homecoming football game against Fort Valley State University will continue as planned but will carry out a limited capacity of fans. Currently, Georgia is the sixth highest state with per-capita COVID infection rates and school starting back up in August has only led to an influx in infections. With hospitals inching towards fuller capacities and college-aged students contributing to infections, the presidents of both colleges have found it appropriate to start implementing safety measures. Atlanta’s third Black college – Clark Atlanta University – has yet to make a decision on how they are going to proceed with their homecoming festivities. They are scheduled to have their homecoming on October 28th. The hope is that doing more at the college level to maintain social distancing and implement mask mandates will help Georgia curb their rising rates.
