Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., recently announced that she will retire as president of Spelman College

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D. has announced that she will be retiring at the end of the school year as president of Spelman College. Campbell is the 10th president at the renowned college and has positively driven the institution towards further accolades. During Campbell’s time as president, she has successfully helped increase staffing, met campaign goals, established new endowment growth of almost a $500 million, and upgraded facilities. Her passion for growth and excellent leadership has propelled Spelman towards new heights.

Campbell is well-liked amongst the college, as well as nationally, and her loss will be felt on a large scale. Spelman College is renowned for its liberal arts programs, Black history, and women’s rights – the college has ranked No. 1 for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The Board of Trustees now has the tedious task of sifting through eligible candidates to replace the large shoes left behind by Campbell in the upcoming school year. The Board expects to have a decision on the matter by the upcoming spring for the 2022-2023 school year.
