“Cocktails on the Course” presented by Atlanta’s Black Chambers Women’s League

by Tessa Owens

The Women's League of the Atlanta Black Chambers presented cocktails on the golf course Saturday, September 29, 2022, at Eagles Landing Country Club. The event was designed to bring cohesiveness between black women in Atlanta to learn the fundamentals of golf and business savviness. The laid-back atmosphere created an environment conducive for professional development and growth. It was also an opportunity to network with black women in business to learn strategies and advantageous networking skills while using the game of golf as leverage.

The 3rd Annual Cocktails on the Course, featured a golf clinic offering tips and techniques on the different types of swings, chipping, putting, driving, and golf etiquette. Although these techniques are applied in the game of golf, they can also connotatively be applied to business etiquette as well.  The Women’s League of the Atlanta Black Chamber of Commerce was founded in 2005. The Atlanta Black Chambers (Formerly Atlanta Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce) is a prominent leading organization in the Metro-Atlanta area. The ABC is dedicated to connecting businesses, community, and government together to bring economic stability and sustainable business to the Atlanta community.

Special Guest included speaker Oneda Castillo, Global Golf Instructor at the Ladies PGA and Member of the African American Golfers Hall of Fame. Castillo joined the LPGA in 1997. She is the third African American woman to achieve Class A status as a LPGA Teaching and Club Professional. Her desired and revered coaching and consulting was available for all who attended. The cost was minimal which ranged from $65 for ABC women’s league members, $ 75 for non-members (women) and $ 65 for ABC members (men).  Lunch was provided which included a cocktail. All while swinging and learning the correct way to tee-off, black business vendors were able to talk green while on the green. No pun intended.

Business casual attire with sneakers or polo with shorts, skirts or pants was the scenery on the green. Whether you had a pair of golf clubs or not, they were readily available. Not only was this event a perfect outing for collaborating with black vendors; it was advantageous in creating an atmosphere accompanied by cocktails and golf lessons.
