Atlanta’s WNBA team – the Atlanta Dream – are establishing themselves as more than just a professional basketball team. For years, the embodiment of sports and politics has gained increasing scrutiny and criticism from the public eye. While some are pushing for professional athletes and players to use their platform to help correct social injustices, others are arguing that they should just play their sport and leave the politics out of the picture.
The Atlanta Dream decided to defy it all by becoming a voice for social justices through the Black Lives Matter movement and were a critical element in the election of Rev. Raphael Warnock to the Senator position for Georgia.
Because of the professional athletes’ efforts in collaborating with platforms spearheading movements for justice for racial disparities, the Atlanta Dream were recently awarded the ESPN Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award in New York. The Dream donated the $100,000 grant given to them by ESPN to the New Georgia Project.
The local non-partisan project’s goal is to fight for civil rights and justice – all of which are aligned with what the Atlanta Dream have been hoping to accomplish through their efforts as well.
