Atlanta Coach Derrick Avery is NFL High School Coach of the Year

Atlanta is celebrating another accomplishment by a local high school coach. Last year, Matt Land, the head coach of Dalton High School’s football team, was the recipient of the NFL’s High School Coach of the Year. Now, Derrick Avery, the coach at Booker T. Washington High School is receiving the 2020 award from the NFL for his leadership, commitment, and impact in the lives of the players and families.

He was the first local coach to join the Rise Up & Vote Campaign, a social justice committee that that Atlanta Falcons have teamed up with, and he led his team to a 4-win improvement and post-season appearance during this past season. Avery’s football program will receive $30,000 to help with improvements in the program, and he is also invited to attend next year’s Superbowl in Los Angeles.

The accomplishment is no easy feat – Avery was chosen out of 400 Georgian coaches and 32 club coaches. He hopes to continue his legacy at Booker T. Washington High School through his influence on the football team and continuing to stand up for social justice in local communities.
